The Medine Sugar Cane Group acquired the Yemen Reserve during the mid-70s and it counts among the largest game reserves on the island. This venue can also boast some of the best wilderness experiences available locally. This western game reserve occupies the slopes of the northern part of the mountains of the Black River Range (from the Black River Gorges Nature Reserve to Rempart Mountain) and covers 3,400 hectares of timeless private wilderness. The biotop being of African-type savannah and of native dry forests, is a haven for the majestic java deer, which has traditionally been associated to those lands.

Tootabi Hunting Safaris has acquired hunting rights to the Yemen grounds in April 2018 – and will be guiding hunters from around the world to see these very spectacular animals and also provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt these Rusa Deer.

Deer Ranching and Hunting
Deer ranching in and around Black River has a very interesting and extensive history and can be tracked down to the 50s. Backed by Medine since the mid-70s, the Yemen Reserve has earned the reputation of keeping a populous deer herd that can amply supply the venison meat market outside the hunting season while attracting a crowd of connoisseurs during the hunting season. Normal deer herd neighbours 10,500 heads year in and out.
